Of courese,I know that Foreign guys are very generous in complimenting Chinese girls.And they get confused when in response to a passionate and sincere exclamation “You are beautiful!” they hear something like:

“No, I am just a common girl” or “Don’t laugh at me” or an almost idiomatic 哪里哪里 “na li na li” (which in this context can be translated as “no, no, no…”). After few more unsuccessful attempts the guys often change their compliment to “You are the most beautiful girl in my eyes”.

In spite of a seeming simplicity of such situation, it illustrates one of the principal cultural differences and can provide an insight into Chinese mentality. I found in internet a research on this topic – “A study of gender differences in compliments and compliment responses in Chinese context”, and want to share with you the findings of research and my own observations.

Politeness – expressed through such interactions as requests, apologies, compliments and responses to compliments – is a basis of human ethical behavior in all cultures. However politeness itself in different cultures is interpreted in different ways.

Chinese politeness still emphasizes respect for the other and modesty for oneself. “Modesty” can be seen, as another way of saying “self-denigration”.

Let’s say, Chinese employee was complimented by colleague or boss:

"You did a very good job!” A polite answer (accompanied by a smile) would be: ”Oh, don’t laugh at me. I still have a lot of things to learn. You are better than me, you did a great job in ………."

Such reaction will satisfy the boss and earn an employee some important points. As we say, “Modesty helps to make progress” (谦虚使人进步qian1 xu1 shi3 ren2 jin4 bu4 ).

I remember that first time when teacher told us that foreigners usually answer “Thank you” to such compliments like “Your dress is very nice” or “You look great” or even “You are amazing”, we just wowed. Anyway, as a good student, I wrote a memo in my notebook about the foreign habit to say “Thanks” in response to compliments… :razz:.

2. Slicing:

Use a plastic knife to slice through a gumdrop, exposing its stickiness so another candy (if it's gummy, slice it, too) will adhere. When possible, apply sticky to sticky.

3. Poking:

A toothpick is best for poking a little hole in candy before adding nonpareil eyes and mouth. The toothpick's tip will turn sticky -- helpful when transporting the nonpareil. Use a clean toothpick to remove the nonpareil from the sticky toothpick.

4. Cookie-Cutter Cutting:

Use a cookie or aspic cutter to cut shapes from gum and sour tape.

5.Slitting:

To stick flat candies into a gumdrop for ears or leaves, make incisions in drop with a plastic knife and then insert the candy.

6. Hanging:

Parents should help with wires. Insert wire (we used 24-gauge) through ornament, from top to bottom, until end pokes out. Using your fingers, or needle-nose pliers, bend the bottom at a right angle and clip off the extra with a nail clipper. Bend the top end into a hook. Let heavier ornaments set for three days before hanging; they will harden, tightening around the wires.

We decorate a tree withornaments that are mostly keepsakes going back to my childhood and my familychildhood, including those collected over the years that our nephew were growing up. We usually cut a native tree fromour own property, but this year a disease killed or damaged all our nativejunipers, so we had to buy one. It's much prettier than our junipers, but it'sjust not the same. We have a lot of mistletoe around the place, so we also havethat and holly branches for decoration. We hang up all the Christmas cards wehave received to remind us of all those near and far that we love.

We exchange names with members of our church for presents so thateveryone gets one present from one other person. We have a program on Christmaseve that is a tradition at our church going back 125 years. We sing carols andeveryone brings cookies or small sandwiches and other "finger foods".
On Christmas morning, we exchange gifts with immediate family members.My mother loves crafts and always makes everyone some small thing to add totheir other presents. We have a nephew who is orphaned and liveswith us. He will be eight next month, so we always try to make Christmasmorning awesome and memorable for him. my onther nephew has three small children aswell, so you can imagine the noise and excitement! Christmas dinner varies fromyear to year. I like goose, my mother likes venison, my nephew likes duck, and others grandchildren favor ham, so we sort ofalternate among those. This year, however, I have been invited to eat with friends,so I don't know what I will have.
